Wi-Fi connectivity on city buses in Dhaka

Dhaka – The government has planed  introduction of third generation Wi-Fi connectivity on city buses to facilitate commuters to surf internet on the go, officials said on Tuesday.

Twenty city buses being operated by state-run Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation will bring the service to the commuters to and from Uttara and Motijheel route.

The service is expected to come into reality on Wednesday, an official of the project said.

Access to Information (a2i) program under Prime Minister’s Office has designed the service. It will also provide technical support to the planned service.

“We have designed the project and hopeful that it will be successful and helpful to the passenger,” said Naimuzzaman Mukta, people’s perspective specialist of the project under the PMO.

Communications Minister Obaidul Quader and State Minister for Post, Telecommunications and Information Technology (ICT) Zunaid Ahmed Palak will inaugurate the innovative serves Wednesday at Farmgate area.

Source informed, a2i using at least four 3G Wi-Fi routers of the state owned mobile phone operator Teletalk. It will help at least 40 passenger to get connected at a time from their mobile devices.

“If the buses run 55 to 60 kilometer speed there will be no disruption of internet speed,” Mukta also added.

At least 10 per cent of the passengers are currently using smart phones and they can use their devices on the move.

Launching of the project will also help detect positioning of the BRTC bus’s on the streets.
